Why Christians Should Be the Healthiest People - But We're Not

In a society where health and wellness are increasingly valued, one might expect that Christians—who are called to treat their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit—would lead the way in healthy living. As followers of Christ, we often talk about spiritual health — prayer, Bible reading, faith, forgiveness — yet many of us neglect the very temple that God entrusted to us: our bodies. It’s a strange paradox.
If anyone should model wholeness, peace, balance, and vitality, it should be the people who walk with the Great Physician Himself. Surprisingly, the facts reveal a different story. Many Christians grapple with health issues, challenges in weight management, and mental wellness. This contradiction invites an important discussion: So why aren’t we the healthiest people on earth? Why should Christians excel in health? Why do we often fall short?
How It Started
I’ll be honest — I was wasting time scrolling on Pinterest when an article caught my eye: “Why Christians Should Be the Healthiest People on the Planet (and Why We Aren’t)” by Rachel at Hopeful Holistic. As a Christian healthcare provider, the title immediately grabbed my attention.
After reading it, I was intrigued, convicted, enlightened, and astounded. It challenged me to rethink why and how I provide care — not through a sick-care lens focused on symptoms, but through a model of wholeness and restoration.
That article became an eye-opening moment. I realized that my patients — and my practice — are more than my profession. They’re my mission field.
The Biblical Foundation for Health
The Bible offers numerous verses that underscore the importance of health and wellness. For instance, in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are reminded that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, serving as a call to honor God through our physical well-being. This resilience should motivate Christians to embrace lifestyles that nurture physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Additionally, Proverbs 3:7-8 advises us not to rely solely on our own understanding but rather to respect the Lord and shun evil, which, in turn, will lead to healing and refreshment for our bodies. These passages emphasize that health is intertwined with spiritual integrity.
The Disconnect Between Belief and Practice
Regrettably, many Christians struggle with unhealthy habits despite these clear biblical directives. Fast food, sedentary behavior, and significant stress levels frequently afflict our communities. This belief-action gap can often be traced back to several critical factors.
Cultural Influences
Cultural norms can sometimes eclipse biblical teachings. In regions like Texas and Louisiana, the emphasis on convenience often leads to poor dietary choices. According to a 2022 study from the American Heart Association, nearly 40% of adults in these states consume fast food daily, which contributes to rising obesity rates and related health problems. 6 in 10 Americans live with at least 1 chronic disease, leading to significant health and economic burdens and 4 in 10 live with multiple diseases & this is projected to nearly double by 2050.
Conflicting Information
Mental Health Struggles
Mental health also emerges as a significant hurdle for many Christians. Anxiety and stress frequently drive unhealthy coping strategies—like overeating or skipping exercise. Furthermore, the stigma associated with mental health within certain Christian circles can deter individuals from seeking the support they need, thereby worsening the situation. For example, a 2021 survey indicated that 56% of churchgoers felt uncomfortable discussing mental health. 1 in 5 Americans adults experience mental illness each year & 1 in 7 American youth ages 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year. Suicide is the 2 nd leading cause of death among people ages 10-24.

Why it matters
We should be living lives that are radically different: Spiritually & Emotionally & Physically. We should be doing all we can to make sure we’re capable of doing things for God’s glory and to build the Kingdom of God while we can. It's hard to do God’s work when we’re unhealthy and exhausted.
This one human life is all we get. Hebrews 9:27
Our purpose in this life is to glorify and enjoy God, reconciling others to Him.
2 Corinthians 5:18
So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Romans 14:12
The Importance of Community Support
Community support serves as a powerful asset in our quest for health and wellness. The church, as a communal hub, can significantly influence a culture that encourages healthy living. Wellness programs and counseling can cultivate an environment that fosters overall health in alignment with our spiritual beliefs.
Accountability and Encouragement
A robust support system can provide accountability, essential for achieving lasting changes. Research shows that people who share their health goals with friends are 65% more likely to reach them. Encouragement from fellow believers can guide us through the hurdles of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Final Thoughts
As Christians, we are called to honor our bodies by striving for health and wellness. Although our reality may not always reflect this calling, bridging the divide between belief and practice is essential. The world doesn’t need more exhausted, anxious Christians. It needs whole, healed ones — the kind who embody the abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10. By focusing on nutrition, staying active, prioritizing mental wellness, and creating a supportive community, we can move towards becoming the healthiest versions of ourselves.
Let us commit to embracing the health principles that our faith advocates. Together, we can foster a culture that not only honors God but also prioritizes the well-being of our bodies, minds, and spirits. We should strive to be the healthiest people, and with dedicated effort, we can turn this aspiration into reality.
Whatever your current state of health, our goal is to walk beside you — helping you and your family move toward balance, restoration, and the abundant life God has promised. We offer health and disease education, counseling, and wellness programs to assist you in reaching your goals.
